It's odd that the projector doesn't play a role in one of your tests... system error upon Return to Lobby when the projector is turned on or turned off. But, it does seem to play a role on another test, where you need to turn off (or disconnect) the projector before restarting.
One possibility is the HDMI cable may be slightly damaged. Not sufficiently damaged to fail 100% of the time, but enough to degrade the signal and therefor cause problems in certain circumstances. Seems like a low probability, but worth exploring.
Some things to check:
- Verify the HDMI cable is plugged into the port on the PC at the graphics card located in the expansion slot. Many desktop PCs will have an HDMI port near the top of the chassis, which connects directly to the motherboard. We want the HDMI cable to be plugged into the HDMI port on graphics card, typically located on the lower back of the PC. The top HDMI port will function in many cases, but it isn't connected to the hardware accelerated GPU on the dedicated graphics card upon which the game relies.
- Verify the HDMI cable isn't partially damaged. Are the end connectors secure to the cable, or are they loose or damaged in any way?
- Is the HDMI port bad? Plug in the HDMI cable to the alternative input on your projector.
Here is a representative image showing the lower HDMI port to use on the graphics card in the expansion port.
