Please note we have bundles available on our website (www.rsgolf.com), and you have the option of buying one for your home.
However, let me make a pass at commenting on basic requirements.
- Ensure you have enough ceiling height and space to swing your longest club (typically a driver). Consider a full backswing through follow-through after ball impact.
- Are you planning to hit a net or a screen?
- If a screen, you will likely need a projector. The make and model of the projector depend on the distance you mount the projector from the screen. It also depends on the aspect ratio of the screen. 4:3 is most common, but some folks try 16:9. I recommend 4:3. Let's determine the overall dimensions and then select the appropriate projector.
- If a net, then you want to have a PC monitor or TV to display the game during play.
- Where are you planning to set up the sim? Do you have a barn, outbuilding, garage, in your house, basement, or a dedicated room in your home?
- You'll want to have the screen 12" to 18" in front of any objects behind the screen. That includes drywall, windows, or mechanical boxes that might be mounted on the wall. The screen will flex with each shot and you don't want it to hit anything behind because it will cause the screen to wear out and tear earlier.
- Turf: You'll need a fairly thick hitting mat (1" to 1.5" thick) that you stand on and hit the ball. You want it thick to cushion the impact when you hit the ball with an iron. You'll also want a cheap thin turf that covers the floor from your thick hitting mat to the screen (or net).
- Recommended distances from tee position to screen (or net) would be between 8' and 10'. Closer than 8' will feel a little claustrophobic, IMO. Between 9' and 10' works well. Greater than 10' makes it harder to keep you shot in the middle.
- If you purchase a net, then it will have some side protection to capture the ball. A screen needs to have a "top skin" and a "side skin" to keep the ball from going off in undesirable directions. Even good golfers will make an occasional bad shot. Having buddies over drinking beer during the Super Bowl will produce some unexpected shots. It's best to plan for an occasional bad shot.
